Repurposing Old to New

I love the idea of upcycling, repurposing, and making something new out of something old, don't you? That's how I like to attack an old canvas sometimes, by adding new layers over old and reinventing it a bit. These abstract landscapes happened just because I had some leftover paint and some old art that I wanted to paint over.... If you have old artwork lying around, why not try painting over it? You never know what you might discover.

Well, the canvas in the bottom right was a new one I started a month ago, but the other three were definitely upcycles. You get the idea. The bottom right canvas inspired me to paint over the other three because I was liking the layered look. The house in the top right reminds of driving through LA, with lots of buildings flying by. It's fun to be a passenger.

My Painted Poppy & Painted Zinnia On GreenBoxArt

I'm thrilled to announce that I have partnered with GreenBoxArt, a leader in contemporary room decor for those who wish to make a statement with their walls. All of their wall art is printed in the US. Their canvases are hand-stretched and easy to hang with pre-installed hangers. Their giclee prints are printed with 100% archival paper and inks. Framing options are also available. My Painted Poppy and Painted Zinnia are now selling exclusively through the GreenBoxArt website. They are currently offering free shipping through Sept. 22. New Paintings!

I've been a daring adventurer painting, painting, painting every weekend for my class Daring Adventures in Paint by Mati Rose. I'm having a blast and really love the process. Some things I've learned from Mati's class:

Have fun. Go for it. Experiment! Keep going. Painting is a process you can discover along the way. It's like life, it's bumpy, not perfect but keep going because there is beauty to be found everywhere your eyes are open to it...

I took these lessons to heart and really dove into the painting process. It was a way for me to get lost in color, shapes and textures in a way that just can't compare to sitting at a computer screen all day. I found that I couldn't wait for it to be my painting time, so that I could be free to make a mess and explore.

Here's what I've made so far and there are more in the works! I hope you like them. I would love to know what you think.

What's new over Labor Day weekend

It's currently over 100 F where I live and I'm trying not to melt. I've been staying cool eating lots of fruit and making iced coffees. My cats are combating the heat by sleeping in the tub. I am longing for jeans and sweaters weather!

Over the weekend I started a printmaking project. I'm carving out a Lino block using one of my new sloth drawings. At first I tried using the traditional Lino block but found it too difficult and time consuming to cut. Then I switched to Speedball's Speedy Carve block and it cuts like butter. Yay! You can see now I'm almost done cutting out the sloth. Before cutting I first had to transfer my drawing to the block by drawing over the reverse image in pencil then burnishing it with a bone folder to the block itself. The Speedy Carve block also picked up the drawing better than the first block. Speedy Carve seems to be a winner so far.

I have also been working on new cards for Paper Loop. The proofs just arrived and I'm looking over the final colors today! I have also spent some time updating the Paper Loop catalog with a new look and easy to read layout. I've been updating the collection for the wholesale site and catalog. These things take time so it's nice to feel like I've made some progress.

I'm also making progress on my latest watercolor painting. Over the weekend I added a third layer of paint. I'm excited to see it all coming along.

We also had fun making homemade pizzas. Yum!
